Just got an XBOX 360 with Kinect at Christmas and it’s pretty cool. The Your Shape “game” is full of great exercises like yoga, dance and cardio boxing. I hate seeing myself on the TV though — too much detail! LOL.

Saturday in Sedona

Spent the day driving up to Sedona and Prescott yesterday. Last year this time it was super cold and rainy when I visited. Yesterday was practically balmy but there were some remnants of last weekend’s snow storm. We ate Chinese for lunch (Cashew chicken for me, Sweet and sour chicken (that wasn’t sweet nor sour enough) for my friend. Bought new readers at a Whole Foods-like store. Shopped at Tlaquepaque. Headed to Prescott for some fancy schmancy olive oil and balsamic vinegar and a visit to the great pet store there. Took the long but scenic route home through Peeples Valley and Wickenburg.

Snow seen in the mountains on the way out of Sedona toward Prescott. Forgot how windy that road was. Got pretty queasy.

Monthly Report – October & November 2011

Got two steroidal injections in the L1-L2. Neither worked and I’m still in pain.
Got two alpha beta peels on my face. Did a great job on my skin but neither lightened the spots created by years of tanning. The aesthetician recommends one $350 peel she insists will take care of the minor discoloration in one treatment. That’s very expensive though!
Reseeded my lawn with Pennington One Step winter rye seed. So much work for very little grass growth.
Gave Zeke and Lucy lots of kisses and got even more in return.
Sold my MacBook Pro.
Turned off my water heater after it started leaking. Turned it back on 4 weeks later and it’s still not leaking again. Have huge empathy for people who had to live before water heaters were invented. How the heck did they properly wash their hair?
Used a $6 glue gun from Hobby Lobby to attach the lamp shade to my vintage lamp.
Got my sweats and warm fuzzy slippers out of storage and finally had to turn on the heat.
Went Black Friday shopping from midnight to 7:30 am. That included breakfast at Butterfields. Learned I’m WAY TOO OLD to stay up all night. Bought a drill for $30 and a bunch of $5 blu-ray movies.
Read lots and lots of books – hope to review more here.

Abandoned

Talk about a psychopath. The serial killer in Abandoned is pure evil and abducts women and keeps them captive in cells for as long as seven years. If they are released, they are lobotomized first so as not to be able to tell their story or give clues as to who took them or where they were kept.

This will be the last of Smoky Barrett series I read. The subject matter of McFayden’s novels is just too gruesome and nightmarish for me.

Shock Wave

Shock Wave is the fifth novel in Sandford’s Virgil Flowers series. Flowers is an investigator with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. He is called to a small Minnesota town to investigate a series of bombings that are related to PyeMart (think Walmart). It turns out that many people and local groups are angry that the superstore chain is coming to town and Flowers has his work cut out for him while he tries to determine who is responsible for the killing.

I loved this book. It’s one of those stories that keeps you reading into the night. I couldn’t put it down.

The Breach

I was not a big fan of The Breach by Patrick Lee. While this is not in the science fiction genre, it was way too “out there” for my taste. One time cop and more recent ex-con Travis Chase travels out to the Alaskan wilderness for some much needed reflection. He stumbles upon a recently crashed passenger jet with murdered bodies inside, including the body of the First Lady of the United States. Before she died, the First Lady wrote a note with directions for the person who finds her. She hints at a missing item that must be found or the fate of the world is at stake. Travis and a CIA operative work together to locate the stolen artifact, fight the bad guys (even one in an invisibility suit!) and save the world. If you liked X-Files, you would probably like this.

The Darker Side

The Darker Side, by Cody McFadyen is what the title suggests. DARK. This thriller centers around FBI special agent Smoky Barrett and her hand picked crack team of agents. The story begins with the homicide investigation of a rather high profile woman who was murdered mid-flight on a passenger jet, and soon other women across the country have been murdered with the same MO. It turns out all the victims are all harboring a secret and the killer wants them to repent of their sins.

Smoky is an interesting character. She not only has lost her husband and 10 year old daughter to the hands of a sociopath, but she herself was violently attacked and her face savagely cut up. If that wasn’t tragic enough for one person to bear, her close friend was murdered as well. Smoky now cares for her friend’s daughter.

I gave this book 3 stars. It might have been 4 stars, were it not for all the religious references. I may not have loved this book, but it was a very quick read and I became attached to the main characters. I’ll definitely be reading future books in the Smoky Barrett series.

Drive (2011)

In Drive, Ryan Gosling stars as a man of little words who works as a car mechanic, part-time stunt driver and sometime getaway driver. The opening scene was far and away my favorite, as Gosling eludes police with his skillful driving. I was actually surprised at how little driving was actually in this film. Most of the film centers on his relationship with his new neighbor, well played by Carey Mulligan, and her son. Bryan Cranston also stars and is, as usual, brilliant.

Gosling was perfectly cast in my opinion. He’s amazing at acting without words .. his facial expressions and body language convey multitudes. I’ve become a huge fan of his.
